Government Influence on the Economy

As American citizens, we have a privilege to vote in representatives who will carry out our wishes in running the government. To select and guide our representatives, we must understand the economy and how the government effects the economy. Today we have two different approaches to the economy. One approach is to allow the economy to operate fairly freely with oversight from the government to keep it from going to extremes while the other is to closely control it through government regulations and expenditures. The first assumes that the economy will regulate itself fairly well while the other assumes that it needs constant government guidance. While the first assumes that people know best how to spend their money, the second assumes the government is better able to know where money should be allocated. The course deals with the implications of each approach to help voters decide what candidates to vote for when they go to the polls.

In addition, everyone complains about taxes and feels everyone should pay their fair share, yet there is a dispute about what is fair. The course deals with several approaches to help voters understand the effect of each.

While the United States is often blamed for world poverty, the facts indicate something else. The course deals with the causes of world poverty today and deals with the effects of trade policies on world trade.
