In this course, I’ll be sharing with you the deep meaning of the Gayatri Mantra as we meditate on the glory of that Ishvara, here Ishvara means God Almighty who created the universe, who is just to worship, who is an embodiment of Knowledge and Light and who is the destroyer of all sins and ignorance. Hopefully he illuminates our intellects.


Gayatri Mantra is composed in the ancient sanskrit language and is found in the Rigveda, one of the oldest and most revered texts in Hinduism. It is attributed to Sage Vishwamitra. Here is the Gayatri Mantra in Sanskrit:


ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥


The Gayatri Mantra, one of the most revered and powerful mantras in Hinduism. It is found in the Rigveda (3.62.10), and its recitation is believed to bring spiritual enlightenment and divine guidance. Here’s the meaning of each part of the Gayatri Mantra:

  1. Om (ॐ): Om is a sacred sound and a spiritual symbol in Hinduism. It represents the essence of the ultimate reality, Brahman, and signifies the divine presence in all beings and things.

  2. Bhoor (भूर्): Refers to the physical realm or the material world. It invokes the earthly existence and represents the materialization of life.

  3. Bhuvaḥ (भुवः): Refers to the mental realm or the realm of thought. It invokes the mental realm and represents the divine life.

  4. Svaha (स्वः): Refers to the celestial realm or the heavenly world. It invokes the divine life and represents the spiritual realm.

  5. Tat (तत्): That, referring to the divine essence or Brahman.

  6. Sa-vitur (स वितुर्): The Sun, symbolizing the source of all life, knowledge, and enlightenment.

  7. Varenyam (वरेण्यम्): Worthy of being revered; deserving of adoration.

  8. Bhargo (भर्गो): Radiance, effulgence; the divine light that bestows wisdom and removes ignorance.

  9. Devasya (देवस्य): Of the divine; belonging to the divine.

  10. Dheemahi (धीमहि): We meditate upon; we contemplate.

  11. Dhiyo (धियो): Intellect, understanding, perception.

  12. Yo (यो): Who, which.

  13. Naha (नः): Our, us.

  14. Prachodayat (प्रचोदयात्): May inspire, may enlighten, may guide.

Meaning of the Gayatri Mantra:

"We meditate upon the divine light of that adorable Sun of spiritual consciousness. May it illuminate our intellect and guide us on the righteous path."

The Gayatri Mantra is considered not just a prayer but a way to connect with the divine consciousness and seek spiritual awakening. It emphasizes the importance of inner illumination and guidance in our journey towards understanding and realizing the ultimate truth.
