Duties and Responsibilities of a Ship Security Officer as per STCW A-VI/5
Proficiency as Ship Security Officer Course complies with regulation VI /5, in accordance with section A -VI /5 of the STCW convention.
The STCW Convention, also known as the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, is one of the most important regulations for merchant mariners.
The syllabus for this course was derived from the IMO Model Course 3.19
The STCW was amended by Manila amendments in 2010. Certain mandatory requirements regarding security training for seafarers came into force on 1st January 2010.
It requires all shipboard personnel to carry out ship security training prior to joining a vessel.
The primary change made to the STCW Code with the implementation of the ISPS Code is the mandatory designation of a "Ship Security Officer" (SSO) on all ships required to comply with the ISPS Code, requiring specific training and certification for this role under STCW Regulation VI/5, ensuring the SSO is adequately prepared to implement and maintain a ship security plan and manage security threats onboard.
Initially Master was entrusted with the SSO duties as he was the most experience officer onboard. Eventually it was handed over to Chief Officer and even to the 2nd Officer.
Security has become a major concern and issue in the shipping industry whereby various illegal acts have taken place against merchant ships trading worldwide with millions of Dollars worth cargo. Therefore appointing a Ship Security Officer onboard every ship and making sure he complies with the Ship Security Plan and maintain security onboard has become a mandatory requirement.
This course provides the proper training required for an existing Ship Security Officer to refresh his knowledge or a new Deck Officer planning to become a Ship Security Officer in the near future. Course is tailor made as per requirements of the IMO Model Course 3.19.
Various Video clips have been included with the supporting documentation and finally two tests to check your knowledge.
First test is a question paper with 20 multi Choice Questions.
Second test is a written question paper containing more broad explantions with 10 detailed questions.
I sincerely hope this course will deliver the required knowledge to the students.
